Discord-style audio chats come to WhatsApp

WhatsApp has begun to implement audio chats, a feature similar to the one that characterizes Discord, which some users of the latest beta version of the Android application can already try.

The company began developing this feature in March of this year, after months of working on the calling function, which was deployed both in its Desktop version and in its mobile applications.

It was precisely for the latter and, more specifically, for Android where it began to test a feature very similar to the one offered by Discord, voice chats, as WABetaInfo was able to verify in beta version 2.23.7.12.

This same portal has now discovered that the platform has already made its latest beta version available to users, 2.23.16.19, which can be downloaded through Google Play and will be rolled out to more users in the coming days.

This new option appears at the top of the screen with a wave-shaped buttonwithin a group chat in which audio chats have been enabled or where such communication has been started.

Once this button is clicked, this voice chat is automatically started and the app displays a dedicated interface. Also, any group chat user will be able to join this audio chat.

WABetaInfo has commented that the chats are automatically closed after 60 minutes if the voice chat -which maintains the end-to-end encryption characteristic of the platform- remains empty and no user has joined it.
