UNESCO calls for clear rules on the use of artificial intelligence in schools

UNESCO asked governments for rules on the use of the artificial intelligencelike the conversational robot ChatGPTespecially for younger students.

In a guide published this Thursday, the UN education organization considers that public authorities are not prepared to handle the ethical problems involved in including artificial intelligence programs in school establishments.

The guide suggests governments define a minimum age of at least 13 years for the use of AI in schools.

Due to a US law, ChatGPT already set this limit for its users, but “many analysts consider this limit to be too low and ask to raise it to 16 years,” the report indicated.

Replacing teachers with these programs could affect children’s emotional well-being and make them more vulnerable to manipulation, the Paris-based organization warned.

According to the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, quoted in a statement, AI “can be an incredible opportunity for human development, but it can also be a source of harm.”

“It should not be integrated into education without public engagement and without strong government rules and safeguards,” he added.

AI programs accessible to the general public have multiplied since the end of 2022.

This growth has raised fears about new forms of plagiarism or cheating in schools and universities, without reducing the attractiveness of an educational market considered potentially very lucrative.

According to UNESCO, artificial intelligence tools have the potential to help children with specific educational needs, as long as teachers, users and researchers help design them and that governments regulate their use.
