China inaugurates its largest wide-field telescope with a photo of the Andromeda galaxy

He brand new chinese space observatory WFST (Wide Field Survey Telescope) has published its first image, the Andromeda galaxy, located more than 2 million light years away.

Due to the large extent of the Andromeda Galaxy in the sky, it is difficult for existing astronomical telescopes to capture a complete and accurate view of the galaxy and its surroundings simultaneously. WFST – located in Qinghai, northwest China – is capable of studying the entire sky of the hemisphere and located in Qinghai, northwest China.

WFST, which combines large field of view and high-resolution imaging capabilities, has produced a multicolor image of the Andromeda Galaxy and its outlying regions. The telescope generated the image using 150 photographs taken over several nights of observing.

The telescope, capable of observing the entire northern sky once every three nights, is expected to help scientists monitor dynamic astronomical events and carry out astronomical observation research in the time domain. It is also expected to improve China’s near-Earth object early warning and surveillance capabilities.

The telescope, which began operating on September 17, measures 2.5 meters in diameter and is located in the city of Lenghu, which has an average altitude of about 4,200 meters. The city is known as China’s ‘Camp Mars’ due to its eroded desert landscape, which resembles the surface of the red planet, Xinhua reports.
