Opportunity or threat? How journalists view AI according to a study

The use of the artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism to write articles or other types of tasks is perceived as both a threat and an opportunity, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The study was prepared through a survey, carried out between April and June, with members of more than 100 media outlets from 46 countries.

It is part of the JournalismAI project, from the London School of Economics and supported by Google News.

Up to 73% of those interviewed consider that tools such as ChatGPT or Google Bard, capable of generating texts, represent “a new opportunity for journalists to improve their effectiveness, productivity and creativity.”

85% of them claimed to have used this type of program to write briefs or titles.

Those interviewed for the study stressed that these types of tools can speed up more mechanical tasks, such as transcribing interviews.

However, 60% also expressed concerns regarding the ethical implications of AI, editorial quality, accuracy, balance and transparency.

“Journalism in the world is going through a new period of technological change that is as exciting as it is terrifying,” Charlie Becket, co-author of the study and director of the project, said in a statement.

AI, according to Becket, is both “a potential threat to information and media integrity” but also “an incredible opportunity to make journalism more effective and trustworthy.”
