Alexa will be smarter: Amazon reinforces its assistant with generative AI

The popular Alexa digital assistant amazon is about to be reinforced with the powers of the artificial intelligence (Generative AI), the company announced this Wednesday in an effort to enter a race dominated by ChatGPT, Google and Microsoft.

Generative AI, like that used in the famous ChatGPT, delivers content as complex as a poem or an academic essay in a matter of seconds, and Amazon’s goal is for Alexa to be able to do that and even more with verbal commands from the living room or bedroom. a user’s kitchen.

At an event at the company’s offices near Washington, the company said that an English version of “Alexa AI” would be available as an option on all of its devices in the United States in the coming months.

“It’s going to take some time to integrate these technologies into the vast footprint that is Alexa. But I am very optimistic and I think we are going to get off to a good start,” explained Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices and services at Amazon.

With the change, Alexa will be able to converse in a more personal style and abandon its robotic tone, the technology giant announced.

Alexa would also leverage real-time information and create the appearance of a personal relationship with users, including learning about their habits or favorite sports teams, for example.

In fact, you could say: “’Alexa, turn on the coffee maker, open the blinds, dim the lights in the study, and turn on the morning news.’ And a routine would be created,” Limp explained.

Daniel Rausch, the executive in charge of Alexa, told reporters that AI would put an extra emphasis on accuracy and that the company’s efforts in AI were not comparable to chatbots, which have been shown to emit inaccuracies or get out of control. .

Amazon also introduced its latest smart home hub, the Echo 8, as well as a sound bar for TVs and new AI-powered search capabilities on its FireTV service.
