Google Maps announced the largest expansion of its search functionality with Lens (previously called “Search with Live View”) to more than 50 new locations, including cities in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. Now, with the power of artificial intelligence, people can explore and tour different locations in Latin America through an augmented reality experience in real time. In addition to this launch, a series of features were presented that help discover new places and establishments and plan trips, among others, in an easier and more organized way.

Sometimes finding your way in an unfamiliar place can become a challenge. To facilitate this task, Lens in Maps helps people follow walking directions and locate emblematic sites or establishments, such as restaurants, cafes, ATMs and businesses efficiently, thanks to the use of the phone camera to view each city in alive. Starting today, this functionality will be available in the following destinations in Latin America:

How does it work? Thanks to augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the screen – once the camera is activated – shows arrows, directions and distance markers at the top and, in some cases, on a mini map at the bottom. . This way, people spend less time figuring out where to go and quickly identifying points of interest and routes.

Google Maps It also launched three new features that accelerate the search for information about destinations, places and much more on the platform. Which is it?

Visual Searches: This feature offers a more intuitive and visual way to search for activities and experiences. When people search for things like “street art,” “latte art,” or “best beaches,” they’ll get a list of photo results based on analysis of billions of images shared by the Maps community, powered by Intelligence Artificial, machine learning, and advanced photo recognition models. In this way, new sites can be discovered that match exactly what each user is looking for. Simply scroll through the results, tap a photo for more information, and navigate there. This new way to search in Maps starts rolling out in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US this week, and will expand to more countries over time.

Thematic results: The company is improving the way search results are organized. Therefore, results will now be grouped by theme to help you have a better experience when exploring places to eat and other activities. For example, if a person is traveling in Tokyo they can search for “things to do” and suggestions for themed places such as “anime”, “cherry blossoms” or “art exhibitions” will appear.
