On clear days and dark nights, the Orion Nebula, named after this hunter from Greek mythology, stands out in the sky. Under the belt of the legendary giant (a combination of three stars that cannot be missed even in Paris) is a spot, but what a spot! When we ordinary people are speechless with admiration for an unexpected object, experts can read how the Earth and the Sun are created, as if from coffee grounds.
With its fuzzy outlines and reddish hues to those with the right binoculars, the Orion Nebula is, above all, our closest star nursery, an open-air maternity ward. Pointing the James Webb Space Telescope at it in 2022 allows us to improve our knowledge of cosmic origins today.
