This peculiar contest was created in 2000 in Savonlinna, Finland, during the time when Nokia, The Finnish technology giant dominated the mobile phone market.

According to the media ‘Contra Muro’, at that time, the mind behind this idea, Christine Lund, was looking for something more than just fun: wanted to promote outdoor activity and change the way old mobile phones were perceived, transforming them from obsolete objects into tools for fun and relief.
“It is a light and modern Finnish sport, perfect for people of all ages. It combines a philosophy of recycling and the entertaining spirit of an active sport. As part of their philosophy, they also provide spiritual freedom to those who must be available at all times,” they explain on their website.
Mobile Phone Throwing is not just a matter of throwing random objects; is a sport that requires skill, strength and a good dose of technique. Participants compete not only to throw the phones as far as possible, but also for the quality and creativity of their throws. From the angle of the launch to the tracking of the phone’s flight, every detail counts to impress the judges and the audience.
What started as a local event in Finland has gained international fame and annually in August the Mobile Phone Throwing World competition is held. This is where records are broken and where the passion for launching phones reaches its peak.
Among the names recorded in the history of Mobile Phone Throwing is Ere Karjalainen, a young Finn who in 2012 managed to throw a phone a record distance of 101.46 meters, thus establishing a milestone in this sport. Likewise, Dries Feremans from Belgium and Jan Singleton from the United Kingdom are two notable examples, whose names appear in the Guinness World Records for their impressive mobile phone launches.
