Ubisoft’s next games may well harness blockchain technology

Since the tightening of laws surrounding loot boxes, Ubisoft has been looking for new ways to monetize its content and it seems that the company has already found its new workhorse. The company wants to explore the integration of blockchain technology in its future games. This will notably take the form of new ways of playing with “play-to-earn”, which will allow players to earn cryptocurrencies or NFTs by playing Ubisoft games.

“As you can see, this industry is changing steadily, with a lot of new revolutions happening. We consider blockchain to be one of those revolutions. It will involve more play-to-earn, which will allow players to earn content and own content. We believe this will dramatically develop the industry, ”Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said on a company earnings conference call.

Ubisoft wants to be one of the pioneers of this type of consumption

The CEO added that Ubisoft is already actively engaged in this process of integrating blockchain into their productions: “So we have worked with many small companies that use blockchain, and we are starting to have a good know-how on how we can impact the industry. We want to be one of the main players in this area. “

Blockchain and NFTs are causing a lot of debate and controversy in the world of video games right now. While Steam recently officially banned blockchain and NFT-based games on its platform, Epic Games is more welcoming. Even so, CEO Tim Sweeney remains skeptical of their relevance: “The whole field is currently entangled in an interactive mix of scams, interesting decentralized tech foundations and scams. “
