Sudan finally regains internet access after month of shutdown

In October, Sudan was the victim of a military coup. Since the putsch of General Abdel Fattah Al-Bourhane carried out on October 25, major disturbances have impacted the country’s Internet network. The telephone network had also been cut recently.

Western ambassadors, activists and even Sudanese judges were calling for the restoration of the internet in the country. A court had ruled on November 9 to restore the Internet, but the verdict has so far not been implemented. It was not until violent demonstrations that the government in place ended up changing its position and restoring access to the Internet network and to the telephone.

According to a report by the local SUNA news agency, Internet services have been restored since November 18, at least partially. Following this recovery, many activists called on the Sudanese to upload videos and information about the protests.
