Computer sales grew 15% in 2021 driven by laptops

The PC market continues to grow coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic and last year 2021 global sales increased by 15% driven by the demand for laptops.

Last year 341 million units of computers were shipped worldwide, of which 91.7 million computers were marketed in the fourth quarter alone, as analytics firm Canalys reported in a statement.

These data represent an increase in global sales of 15% compared to 2020, and 27% compared to 2019. They are also the highest figures since 2012, due to the negative trend that the sector had experienced before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal and professional laptops are the segment that most drives the market, with a growth of 16% compared to 2020 and a total of 275 million units sold.

Desktops are also growing, albeit more moderately, 7% more than in 2020 to reach the figure of 66 million devices shipped globally.

In terms of sales by manufacturer, the Chinese company Lenovo was the one that shipped the most computers in 2021, with 82.1 million computers sold, 13.1% more than 2020.

Behind is the American HP, which last year grew 9.5% to sell 74.1 million computers, followed by Dell, with 59.3 million computers shipped and an annual growth of 8.9%.

Apple was the fourth global manufacturer of computers in 2021 according to data from Canalys, which places the US brand with the highest growth in the sector, 28.3%, and 29 million computers sold. Acer closes the top 5, with an annual increase of 21.8% and 24.4 million computers.
