The Cuban American Jonathan Guerra Blanco, alias Abu Zahra Al-Andalusi, was sentenced in a federal court in Miami (U.S) to 16 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to the terrorist organization Islamic State (EI), reported this Wednesday the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

The sentence imposed by federal Magistrate Robert N. Scola Jr. comes after the defendant pleaded guilty in December 2020 to one count of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, IS, through the translation of documents into Spanish and making videos.

According to the Attorney General’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, authorities discovered in 2019 that Guerra Blanco was following instructions from the terrorist group in which adherents were asked to, on their own, publish “propaganda, fundraising requests, recruitment material, justification for attacks on the United States and all kinds of material useful to IS.”

“Guerra Blanco tried to provide material support to ISIS, translating the group’s materials into Spanish for its target audience,” adds the Prosecutor’s Office.

In addition, Guerra Blanco produced videos with a view to recruiting Spanish speakers and terrorizing regular citizens of Spain.

“Many of the videos that Guerra Blanco produced and distributed from its two IS media networks glorified the terrorist group’s violence and called for an attack on the Spanish authorities,” the press release highlights.
