WHO chief and Chinese premier meet to discuss coronavirus

The head of the World Health Organization (who) announced on Saturday that he met with Prime Minister Chinese Li Keqiang to talk about the COVID-19and research on the origins of the pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is visiting Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics, posted a photo on Twitter showing the two men meeting in a room.

“Delighted to meet Premier Li Keqiang. We talked about covid-19 and the need for a great and equitable effort to vaccinate 70% of all populations this year” said Tedros

Tedros is making his first visit to China since January 2020, just weeks after the first cases of covid-19 were reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

After many delays, a team from the WHO and international experts traveled to Wuhan in January 2021 to determine the origin of the virus, in cooperation with their Chinese counterparts.

Their joint report from March 2021 concluded that the most likely hypothesis is that the virus passed from a bat to humans via an intermediate animal.

They considered the theory that the virus could have ‘escaped’ from a Wuhan laboratory to be “extremely unlikely”.
