Court of The Hague receives complaint against Bolsonaro for crimes against humanity

The International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC) notified an investigative commission of the Senate of Brazil receipt of his complaint for alleged crimes against humanity committed by the president Jair Bolsonaro during the pandemic, a parliamentary source reported this Thursday.

The TPI, located in the Dutch city, reported the reception of the complaint on Wednesday to Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, vice president of the investigative commission (CPI) of the pandemic, his communication advisers confirmed to AFP.

The complaint, which will now be evaluated by the CPI to determine if an investigation should be opened, was filed last December and is based on the final report of the CPI, approved on October 26.

Seven of the 11 senators who participated in the investigation endorsed that report, which accused Bolsonaro of nine crimes, including “crimes against humanity”, “quackery” and “incitement to crime”.

Since the beginning of the health emergency, Bolsonaro tried to avoid restrictive measures to contain the virus, defended drugs without proven scientific efficacy -such as hydroxychloroquine- and sowed doubts about anticovid vaccines.

The leadership of the ICC had sent the conclusions of the report, in addition to the CPI, to various local authorities, such as the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil.

The Planalto Palace did not respond to an AFP request for comment on the complaint.

The ICC has jurisdiction to judge possible crimes that affect the international community, so the Senate commission hopes to initiate an investigation in that court for the alleged crimes against humanity cited in its report.

Brazil has so far recorded more than 635,000 confirmed deaths from covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
