What happened?

On July 15, 2011, “Elsy was working as a domestic worker when the health emergency happened”said the group in a brief statement.

However, that was not enough proof for justice, who “acted irregularly and its procedural guarantees”, they assure. “The presumption of innocence was not respected and he did not have a defense to watch over his rights,” they criticized.

“Although at Elsy he was released, the Surveillance Court did not act in a timely manner”, assured in the NGOadding that an interpretation error on the part of the Public ministry forced her to stay another month and a half in jail.

In the past two months, at least 5 women, including Elsy, were released after being sentenced for obstetric emergencies. On December 23, the Justice granted the freedom to Karen, Kathy and Evelyn and, in January of this year, it corresponded to Kenya, who had served a nine-year sentence.

Manuela Justicia y Esperanza assures that about 181 women with voluntary abortions “They have been criminally persecuted in El Salvador.”

In The Savioras in other countries of Americaabortion is still criminalized since 1998. Last October, the country’s Legislative Assembly rejected a reform that sought its decriminalization.
