United States: two Peruvian brothers sentenced to more than 7 years in prison for defrauding Hispanics

Two Peruvians were sentenced to more than seven years in prison for defrauding thousands of Hispanic residents in their country. U.Sto those who made them pay large sums of money through false threats of deportation, the authorities of the North American country reported this Monday.

Brothers Josmell Espinoza32 years old, and Charles Spinoza40, had pleaded guilty in December to committing mail and wire fraud from Peruvian call centers they owned.

Both were arrested in Peru and extradited to the United States in June of last year.

A federal judge for the Southern District of Florida sentenced Josmell Espinoza to 88 months in prison and his brother Carlos to 102 months in prison.

The case involves five other Peruvians, who were already sentenced last year sentenced to between 90 and 110 months in prison after his extradition to the United States in 2020.

Between April 2011 and July 2019, The Espinoza brothers and their accomplices -Henry Milla, Evelyng Milla, Jerson Renteria, Fernan Huerta and Omar Cuzcano- deceived thousands of people by telephone, mostly Hispanic immigrants who had only been in the United States for a short time.

The defendants told their interlocutors that they had to pay them for English courses or educational products that they had not requested and claimed that if they did not, they could be imprisoned and deported.

When victims objected to sending the money, the scammers posed as attorneys, federal agents, or representatives of a so-called “misdemeanor court” to make them believe they were obligated to pay.

Charles Spinoza got more than 1.3 million dollars with that fraudand his brother Josmell, more than 700,000, according to the indictment.
