For the first time a US arms manufacturer will compensate families of victims of a massacre

Arms manufacturer Remington reached an agreement to compensate the families of the victims of the massacre of Sandy Hook in 2012, according to court documents released Tuesday.

“The plaintiffs in this action report that an agreement for damages was concluded between the parties”says the document presented by relatives of the victims.

According to the press, the agreement implies the payment of 73 million dollars.

The families sued Remington and its subsidiary Bushmanter for knowingly selling a version of the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, for military use, “grossly inappropriate” for civilian use.

One of those rifles was used by Adam Lanza to kill 26 people, including 20 children, on December 14, 2021 at the Sandy Hook school.in the state of Connecticut.

That weapon was also used in the Las Vegas shootings that left 86 dead in 2017 and in the one in Parkland, Florida, in 2018, with a balance of 17 dead.

In March 2019, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that the Remington company could be sued to determine if its advertising for the assault rifle was responsible for shootings that left a large number of victims.

At a hearing in November 2017, the relatives’ lawyer, Joshua Koskoff, relied heavily on Bushmaster’s marketing, which, in his opinion, advertised the rifle as an assault weapon.

“That weapon was not promoted for sport or self-defense,” the lawyer said at the time.
