During the celebrations of this sacrament, Arango said “We baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”; but nevertheless, Olmsted explained that the real sentence starts with “I baptize you”in singular, detailed the CNN news network.

“The problem with using ‘We’ is that it is not the community that baptizes a person, but rather it is Christ, and He alone, who presides over all the sacraments, so it is Christ Jesus who baptizes,” the bishop noted in a message to parishioners published last month.

According to the diocese’s website, the people who came with Arango they must be baptized again, since this action has lost its validity. Likewise, it is very likely that they will have to repeat the other sacraments since they do not have baptism.

The father Andres Arango resigned from St. Gregory Church in Phoenix on February 1.

“I am saddened to learn that I have performed invalid baptisms throughout my ministry as a priest regularly using the wrong formula. I deeply regret my mistake and how this has affected numerous people in your parish and elsewhere.” Arango wrote on the site.

To try to help those affected, the diocese created a website for anyone who believes they had an invalid baptism, noting that baptisms celebrated by Arango that took place after June 17, 2021 are valid.

“I also sincerely regret that this error has resulted in the interruption of the sacramental life of several faithful. That is why I promise to take all the necessary measures to remedy the situation of all those affected”, he pointed Olmsted.
