Mexico resumed export of avocados to the US.

Mexico resumed the export of avocados to United Statesafter being suspended almost a week ago following threats to a US inspector, the US Department of Agriculture reported in a statement on Friday.

“The avocado inspection program in Michoacán, Mexicorestarted and avocado exports to United States resumed” states the text.

have been enacted “additional measures that improve the safety of inspectors” of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) who work in the field, after a telephone threat made to an employee on February 11, reports the Department from farming (USDA).

“The safety of USDA employees who are simply doing their jobs is of the utmost importance,” insist.

United States thanks “the positive and collaborative relationship” with Mexico which allowed to solve the problem.

The reinforcement of security was decided in collaboration with the regional security officer of the embassy of United States in Mexicothe national plant protection organization of Mexico (SENASICA) and the Association of Producers and Exporter Packers of Avocado from Mexico (APEAM).

Michoacan is the world’s largest producer of avocado and 85% of its production is destined to United Stateswhere it is consumed in large quantities.

But it is also one of the Mexican states hardest hit by violence linked to organized crime, in whose sights are, among others, avocado producers, who suffer robbery, aggression and extortion.
