“Fortunately the school was closed due to the covid-19 pandemic”, the director of the provincial crisis management center, Mohamad-Bagher Honarvar, told state television.

The F-5 training aircraft went down around 09:00 (05:30 GMT) in Monajama neighborhood in the center of the city.

The device was based at Shahid Fakouri in Tabriz and was carrying out a training mission when it crashed, the commander of this base, General Reza Yusefi, told local television.

The plane experienced a technical problem on its way back from its mission and the pilot failed to reach the runway, it added.

“The two pilots could have ejected, but they sacrificed themselves to be able to lead the device to a more isolated area,” said the military officer.

Authorities are investigating the reasons for the accident, state television said.

The official Irna agency published a short video showing firefighters putting out a fire at the accident site.

The Iranian air force is essentially equipped with Russian Mig and Sukhoi fighter jets dating from Soviet times, some Chinese aircraft and US F4 and F5 aircraft from before the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Iran has been under harsh US sanctions since 2018 when Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal brokered between Tehran and major powers, making it difficult to access supplies.
