The mercenaries were told that Putin wants a short break to show that he is negotiating with Zelenskybut assured them that no agreement would be reached and that the effort would simply be a hoax, according to a source close to senior officials.

After Moscow invaded last week, Zelensky he addressed the nation and claimed that Russian special forces were in the capital looking for him as “target number 1”.

Wagner it is a private military company and has been closely associated with Putin’s projects around the world.

Owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin, an oligarch known as Putin’s cook, the group has carried out covert operations in Africa and the Middle East, and was also responsible for fomenting trouble in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

“They are very effective,” said Gen. Sir Richard Barrons, a former commander of Joint Forces Command.

“They can come out of the shadows, do very violent things, and then disappear again, without it being obvious who was responsible. They are not directly linked to the Russian government and therefore can deny it,” he added.

The sources indicated that they had apparently been briefed on the planned invasion of Ukraine in December, long before the Russian military was informed.
