The United Kingdom assures that the sanctions against Russia seek to “bring down Putin”

A Downing Street spokesman claimed on Monday to want to “bring down the Putin regime” with the sanctions imposed for the invasion in Ukrainebut backtracked and explained not to seek “regime change”, but to “stop” Russia.

British sanctions, directed in particular at the Russian president and the central bank, “they are designed to bring down the Putin regime”said a spokesman for the prime minister Boris Johnsonto the journalists.

Questioned about these words, the spokesman immediately retracted: “We are not looking for a regime change at all. The issue here is how we stopped Russia.”

These statements come after a series of virulent exchanges between Moscow and London. Johnson last week called Putin a “dictator.”

On Monday, the Kremlin explained that Putin’s decision to put its nuclear deterrent force on alert was a reaction to British diplomat Liz Truss’s words about possible clashes between Russia and NATO.

Truss declared on Sunday that “if we don’t stop Putin in Ukraine, there will be other countries threatened, like the Baltic countries, Poland, Moldova. And this could end up in a conflict with NATO.”
