Ukrainian soldiers who dance are a hit on social networks

As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and focuses on Kharkiv this Wednesday, many Ukrainian soldiers are posting videos of them dancing on social media. A way to forget, the time of a song, the bombings of Moscow.

Followed by 3.8 million subscribers, Alex Hook is probably one of the best known. The soldier, posted in the Donbass region, began posting videos on TikTok last December to reassure his daughter. Since the start of the war launched by Vladimir Putin, the notoriety of the soldier has skyrocketed.

Michael Jackson and the bombings

His video from February 12, in which he dances to Michael Jackson in military uniform, has nearly 76 million views on TikTok. Many Internet users have expressed concern about his silence in recent days, but the young soldier posted a video on Monday assuring that he was well and fighting for Ukraine.

Other images of Ukrainian soldiers fidgeting have been shared. Like this video of two heavily armed soldiers, wiggling to techno music. Shared by Olexander Scherba, the former Ukrainian ambassador to Austria, it has been viewed more than 110,000 times. The diplomat accompanied it with a caption reading: “Day seven. Ukraine is standing. Ukraine is bleeding. Ukraine is dancing. »

Representations of war

Along with videos of Ukrainian soldiers, footage of President Volodymyr Zelensky dancing has also gone viral. However, these do not date from the conflict but from the participation of the head of Ukraine in the program Danse avec les stars, and his victory, in 2006. The head of state was a comedian and actor before creating the surprise in winning the presidential election in 2019. Volodymyr Zelensky has since swapped suits for military fatigues.

These images show the representation Ukrainians have of the war that has pitted them against Moscow for a week, as well as the one they want to share. They show the world dance moves, civilians stopping tanks with their bare hands and shell damage. A way of describing a population that sees itself as a – not so small – country that still and always resists the invader…
