A million people fled Ukraine in the first week of the war unleashed by Putin

One million refugees fled Ukraine into neighboring countries since the start of the Russian invasion a week ago, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Thursday.

“In just seven days, we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countriesGrandi tweeted.

“For millions of others, inside Ukraineit is time for the weapons to fall so that humanitarian assistance can arrive and save lives”, he added.

The main person in charge of UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expects in the next few days to move to Romania, Moldova and Polandthree of the countries that are receiving this flow of refugees.

According to data from the Polish border guard, on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. GMT), more than half a million people had entered the country since Ukraine.

A UN balance not updated since Tuesday also indicates that more than 115,000 people fled to Hungary and around 80,000 to Moldova.

This week, UNHCR launched an emergency appeal to raise $1.7 billion to help people exiled or displaced by the conflict in Ukraine.

According to his estimates, 12 million people in the country and another four million who fled abroad will need protection and assistance in the coming months.
