The great initiative of a New York restaurant to fund humanitarian aid

While Ukraine is at war with Russia, a chain of solidarity has formed around the New York restaurant Veselka. Every day, a queue forms in front of this establishment which mainly offers typical Ukrainian dishes, reports the Huffington Post. The owner of the premises, like 40% of the employees, is of Ukrainian origin.

By launching the “Eat borcht” operation, he wanted to show his support for his compatriots. “Borcht” is a soup mainly made from beets. Within days, this dish became the restaurant’s bestseller. The small portion is sold for 6 dollars (5.50 euros) and the large one for 11 dollars (10 euros).

A breakfast but a great solidarity

“I felt it was important to help Ukrainians, my compatriots. So all of our borcht sales will be donated to support Ukrainian humanitarian aid,” Jason Birchard, Veselka’s manager, told the news agency. Reuters. The New York establishment is also collecting donations of basic necessities for Ukraine.

As related by New York Post, the gesture seems to be appreciated by the locals, as evidenced by the long queues in front of Veselka on a daily basis. “I don’t know if making or eating borcht is going to make a big difference. But I find it amazing how the world has come forward and shown its solidarity with Ukraine. In my way, having breakfast in this restaurant helps to show this solidarity,” says a customer.
