NATO closes the door to the creation of a no-fly zone in Ukraine

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) closed the door on Friday to calls for a no-fly zone in Ukraine, but Western allies warned they could apply more sanctions if Russia does not stop the war.

The secretary general of the transatlantic military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, assured that NATO will not have planes acting in Ukraine or troops on Ukrainian territory.

“The allies agreed that we should not have aircraft over the airspace of Ukraineor NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine”, Stoltenberg said at the end of an emergency meeting of foreign ministers of the organization.

In Stoltenberg’s view“the only way to implement a no-fly zone in Ukraineis by sending NATO fighter jets, which would have to shoot down Russian planes operating in Ukraine.

“We think that if we do that, we will end up having something that can turn into an all-out war in Europe, engulfing many other countries and causing much more human suffering.”he expressed.

For that reason, NATO allies took the “painful decision to strengthen sanctions and support for Ukrainebut “without involving NATO forces directly in the conflict in Ukraineneither in its territory nor in its air space.

The Western military alliance took this position despite dramatic calls by the Ukrainian authorities for a no-fly zone to be implemented to protect the population from Russian fighter attacks.

In a message on Twitter, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on Western countries to “Don’t let [Vladimir] Putin convert to Ukraine In Syria”.

“We are ready to fight. We will continue fighting but we need allies to help us with concrete, decisive and rapid actions”, pointed.

Stoltenberg admitted that the immediate prospects in Ukraine are worrying.

“In the coming days we will see things get worse, with more deaths, more suffering and more destruction, as Russian forces bring in heavy weapons and continue their attacks across the country.”he pointed.

Regarding the role of the western alliance, Stoltenberg said that it will continue “doing what is necessary to protect every inch of NATO territory. NATO is a defensive alliance.”

keep up the pressure

Stoltenberg received the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Friday before an emergency meeting in which the head of European Union (EU) diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and the foreign ministers of Finland and Sweden, two associated countries, also participated. .

For her part, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in a statement together with Blinken that the EU is “ready” to apply more sanctions to Russia in the event that President Vladimir Putin does not stop the war in Ukraine.

“To make it very clear, we are ready to take severe new measures if Putin does not stop and reverse the war that he has started.”said the German official.

After a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Borrell denied that the objective of the sanctions is to promote a change of government in Russia or the Putin’s fall.

“The purpose of the sanctions is to weaken the Russian economy, make it feel the weight of the consequences, and strengthen the position of the Ukraineus in the next negotiations. But it has nothing to do with regime change in Russia.” assured.

The EU has already adopted strong financial sanctions against Russian officials and banks, and authorized the granting of Temporary Protection to Ukrainian citizens or residents in that country who enter the European space fleeing the war conflict.

For his part, Blinken admitted that the situation in Ukraine “it will get even worse” in the coming days and weeks, but assured that the sanctions “they will have an impact”.
