US Congress Takes First Step To Approve $14 Billion In Aid For Ukraine

The House of Representatives of United States gave the green light Wednesday night to a new federal budget that includes nearly $14 billion in aid for Ukrainehit by war.

The text, which includes an economic and humanitarian component, but also arms and ammunition for Kiev, must now be voted on in the Senate before being promulgated by President Joe Biden.

“The brave, freedom-loving people of Ukraine and our allies in the region will receive urgently needed funds to fight Vladimir Putin and the illegal and immoral Russian invasion,” said in a joint statement the Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosithe leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.

These funds must allow Kyiv protect their power grids, combat cyberattacks, and equip themselves with defensive weapons.

The package also includes more than $2.6 billion in humanitarian aid and more than $1 billion to support refugees fleeing Ukraine.

“We will continue to support the brave Ukrainian people who are fighting for their country,” Biden said. On twitter.

In addition, the package includes more than $6.5 billion for the Pentagon, to be used to deploy troops to the region.

Funds are also earmarked to finance the response against Moscow, starting with sanctions against Russian oligarchs.

The package of measures for Ukraine it has been attached to the 2022 US federal budget of $1.5 trillion that senators are expected to approve in the coming days.

Lawmakers were also expected to vote Wednesday on a new sanctions bill that includes a ban on importing oil and other petroleum products from Russia.

Biden has already instituted an oil ban by executive order, but Democratic leaders in Congress want their members to put their support for the decision on the record.

Either way, the Senate is unlikely to do the same.
