According to the BBC, Orlov stated: “We received information that the Russian military captured our largest hospital… and they are using our patients and doctors as hostages.. We can confirm this information and also the governor of the region of Donetsk has confirmed this confirmation. We received information that there are 400 people there.”

While the top official of Mariupol, Pavlo Kyrylenkoconfirmed that the Russians were holding hostage doctors and patients from the Regional Intensive Care Hospital.

“It is impossible to leave the hospital”, Kyrylenko wrote on Telegram. “There is heavy shelling, we stay in the basement. Vehicles have been unable to reach the hospital for two days. High-rise buildings are burning all around. [… ] The Russians took 400 people from neighboring houses to our hospital. We can’t leave.”

Evacuations in Mariupol

Some 20,000 people managed to leave the besieged port city of Mariupol on Tuesday, driving along a humanitarian corridor agreed with Russian forces.said an official.

“Today, some 20,000 people have left Mariupol in private cars using a humanitarian corridor. About 4,000 cars left the cityKirilo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, said in a statement.

In total, around 29,000 people were evacuated from various besieged cities across Ukraine in the course of Tuesday alone, according to the source.

By Monday, 160 vehicles had already left the port city of Mariupolwhere conditions are dire after days of bombardment and siege by Russian forces and their pro-Russian separatist allies, forcing residents to live in basements.

The humanitarian corridor used by these columns of vehicles links Mariupol with Zaporizhia, in the northwest, passing through Berdyansk, a distance of about 270 km of road.

After a series of failures due to the lack of a Russian-Ukrainian ceasefire, evacuations have accelerated in Mariupol, while its inhabitants lack food and water.

More than 2,100 people have been killed in Mariupol since the Russian invasion began on February 24, according to city authorities.
