The theater was hit on Wednesday by a Russian bombardment, reported the mayor’s office of this beleaguered port city in southeastern Ukraine.

“The plane dropped a bomb on the building. It is impossible to establish an immediate balance, because the bombings in that residential area continue “indicated the mayor’s office on Telegram, showing a photo of the theater with its central part destroyed.

The Mariupol theater was bombed on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, local authorities reported.

“The shelter entrance is blocked by debris. We are verifying information about the victims,” she added.

The Russian Defense Ministry denied bombing the theater and attributed the explosion to a Ukrainian nationalist battalion, called Azov. Moscow had already accused that military unit of the bombing last week of a pediatric and maternity hospital in Mariupolwhich had generated international outrage.

More than 2,000 civilians died in Mariupol, besieged and bombed for several days by Russian forces, according to the balance of local authorities.
