Tornado kills at least one person and destroys homes near New Orleans

A twister killed at least one person and destroyed homes near the US city of New OrleansLouisiana, on Tuesday night, according to news reports.

“Big tornado on the ground in New Orleans! Seek shelter now!” tweeted the local office of the National Weather Service at 8:35 p.m. local time (02:35 GMT).

“Severe home damage” was reported in Arabi, an eastern suburb of New Orleans, the Saint Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

“Rescue” groups are on the way for residents trapped in their homes, he added.

At least one person was killed in Arabi, the county council president told local television.

Images broadcast on local television and online showed homes destroyed, with utility poles, power lines and debris littering the streets.

The tornado was produced by a line of storms traversing the southern United States, with other damaging tornadoes identified earlier in eastern Texas and possibly others to come.

“A damaging gust or tornado is still possible in the next few hours,” the National Weather Service tweeted.
