kyiv’s fancy restaurants are handing out free meals to locals

In the midst of the war against Russia, the gastronomic restaurants of kyiv (Ukraine) changed their activity. They are now serving free meals to locals, as Russian forces slowly surround the capital.

The Tchernomorka is one of the restaurants taking part in the war effort. Blinis with trout caviar, pike caviar with green onions and mussels in Thermidor sauce have disappeared from the menu since the restaurant closed on February 24, the first day of the Russian invasion. The “customers” who come today receive a nutritious dish of chicken rice with a glass of orange juice.

Long queues in front of stores

If everyone can come here to eat, most of those who move are elderly people. “Some ask for food for neighbors who can’t go out or are bedridden,” explains Dmytro Kostroubine, restaurant manager. Obviously, we trust them and we give them for them too. »

So far, kyiv has not been pounded by the Russian army, unlike Kharkiv, the country’s second city, or Mariupol, a strategic port on the Sea of Azov. But there is a shortage of fresh produce in the stores and the queues can be long, especially during periods of curfew imposed by the authorities.

Restaurants to feed the soldiers

“You have to be strong to queue for food,” says a 74-year-old retiree who came to pick up a take-out meal at Chernomorka. Meals are provided in coordination with Food Market kyiv, founded by Ukrainian restaurateur Alex Cooper, owner of many establishments in the country.

Many restaurants are also mobilizing to feed the fighters. Pavlo Shevtsov, who runs the Molodist restaurant in the Food Market, says he has already prepared some 6,000 meals for the soldiers. “We know how to cook,” he says. We may not know how to fight or bring medicine, weapons or ammunition. But we are present and we do what we can. »
