Referendum in Uruguay: the voting centers open for the consultation that questions the Executive of Luis Lacalle Pou

Some 2.7 million citizens are called to vote in the 7,060 voting centers that opened their doors this Sunday in Uruguay to decide whether or not to repeal 135 of the 476 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC), a flagship project of the Executive of Luis Lacalle Pou (center right).

The tables for the elections will be open, according to the information provided by the Electoral Courtfrom 8:00 a.m. (11:00 GMT) to 7:30 p.m. (22:30 GMT) this Sunday.

The campaign for these elections, in which Uruguayans support or not the use of Law 19,889enacted in July 2020 -barely three months after the start of the mandate of Lacalle Pou (2020-2025)-, has been developed in a tone of rejection or support for the management of the Executive, made up of a coalition of five parties.

The president himself, at the press conference held this Wednesday at the Executive Tower (seat of government) to defend his project, acknowledged that “it is not the same” to govern with that article than without it, although he confessed that if the option of the ‘No’, defended by the ruling party, is not “to celebrate” either.

The ‘Yes’ is promoted by a series of social and political organizations, among them, the trade union center, the PIT-CNT, and the Broad Front, left-wing coalition that governed Uruguay between 2005 and 2020 and today it is the main opposition force, which considers that these articles violate important rights of the Uruguayan population.

With that idea, they began a campaign to collect signatures in 2021 which, last December, was confirmed to have exceeded the necessary figure (671,544 signatures, 25% of the electoral roll) for the Electoral Court to enable the celebration of the referendum.

In a decision not without controversy, the body decreed that the pink ballot defend the ‘Yes’ and the light blue one support the ‘No’.

The advisability of one of the two sides identifying with the symbol that unites all Uruguayans, their soccer team, was one of the great controversies of a campaign that has been full of risque statements and accusations, something unusual in a country like Uruguay.

The polls foresee a great equality in the final figures and announce a high level of undecided (10%) until this Sunday and, for the first time in the last electoral contests, no consultant will conduct an exit pollso we will have to wait for the own Electoral Court announce the first results.

With the prohibition of proselytizing from 00:00 (03:00 GMT) on Friday and selling alcohol from 19:30 (22:30 GMT) on Saturday, Uruguayans began to cast their vote this Sunday, which is mandatory and can only be exercised in their territory, that is, neither postal nor consular suffrage is enabled.
