After Biden’s words, the US clarifies that it does not seek the fall of Putin for a regime change in Russia

Secretary of State for United StatesAntony Blinken, clarified today during a visit to Israel that his government “does not have a regime change strategy in Russia”, after the declarations yesterday of the American president, Joe Bidenthat his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin“cannot remain in power”.

“I think the president pointed out last night that, simply, Putin cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against Ukraine or any other”, noted today Blinken during a press conference in Jerusalem with his Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid.

“As you know, and as you have heard us say repeatedly, we don’t have a regime change strategy in Russia, or anywhere else”, The Secretary of State mentioned, adding that “in this case, as in any case, it depends on the people of the country in question, it depends on the Russian people.”

Blinken he is currently in Israel for an official visit, which included meetings today with Prime Minister Naftali Benet; the president, Isaac Herzog, and the defense minister, Beny Gantz, in addition to Lapid, and which will continue with a meeting this afternoon in the West Bank city of Ramallah with the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

Another of the issues discussed today was the progress of the negotiations to save the nuclear agreement with Iran, something that Washington promotes and which Israel opposes.

“I am very hopeful that the United States will listen to the concerned voices from the region, from Israel and others, on this critical issue,” Benet pointed out during a joint press conference, in which he also stressed that, although there are differences, the alliance with the US is unbreakable.

On this issue, Blinken stressed that “with or without a new agreement”, both governments will continue to work together and with other regional partners to counter Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region.

These statements come shortly before the start of the so-called “Negev Summit”, in which Blinken and Lapid will participate along with the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Morocco and Egypt.

This unprecedented event marks a new milestone in Israel’s relations with its regional partners following the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, through which it established diplomatic relations with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco.

Although no official information has yet emerged on the issues to be discussed at this summit, different analysts anticipate that Israel and the Arab countries will seek to present a unified front against Iran and establish their position regarding a new nuclear agreement.
