More than 3.8 million Ukrainians have left the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion

More than 3.8 million Ukrainians have already taken refuge in other countries since the beginning of the invasion of Russia on February 24, according to the latest estimates from the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR.

Of them, and according to data from the agency, 2.2 million have reached Poland (2.3 million according to the latest balance of the Polish Border Guard this Sunday), to which must be added almost 580,000 in Romania, 380,000 in Moldova, almost 350,000 in Hungary and about 270,000 in Slovakia.

Russia and Belarus They have welcomed approximately half a million refugees since the start of the conflict, according to data collected by UNHCR from official sources of the receiving countries.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has denied that it is deporting Ukrainian citizens to Russia and that it has an office in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don to facilitate these procedures.

“We have never helped organize or carried out forced evacuations. Neither in Ukraine. Nowhere in the world. We would not support any operation that goes against the will of the people”, the ICRC posted on Twitter.

On Friday, the Ukrainian deputy prime minister, Irina Vereshchuk, accused the head of the ICRC, Peter Maurer, of making “a very questionable decision” by opening an office of the organization in Rostov-on-Don that “legitimate” deportations to Russia.

The UN already warned immediately after the start of the Russian offensive that the war could cause between four and five million refugees, figures that are getting closer given that tens of thousands of people continue to leave Ukraine every day.
