New fires broke out in the exclusion zone around the nuclear power plant in Chernobyloccupied by Russian forces, reported an authority in Ukraine.

Chernobyl’s No. 4 reactor exploded on April 26, 1986, causing the worst nuclear accident in history, leaving hundreds dead and spreading radioactive contamination across Europe.

The number 4 reactor building is contained in a massive double sarcophagus to contain radioactive contamination.

The original sarcophagus, built by the Soviets, deteriorated over the years. A new one, completed in 2019, was built abroad.

The plant’s other three reactors were gradually shut down after the disaster, the last one in 2000.
