China finds 1,228 new local COVID-19 cases and 5,658 asymptomatic

The National Health Commission of China announced today the detection of 1,293 new positives of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 this Monday, 1,228 of them by local contagion.

Jilin (northeast, 1,055), Shanghai (east, 96), Shandong (east, 12) and Liaoning (northeast, 10) were the places with the highest number of cases.

Health authorities also reported today the detection of 5,758 asymptomatic cases, 5,658 by local contagion, although Beijing does not count them as confirmed cases unless they show symptoms.

He highlighted the number of asymptomatic detected in Shanghai (4,381), a city that is partially confined this week to stop its worst outbreak since the pandemic began.

The total of this type of infections under observation is 43,425, of which 1,309 come from other territories.

China, which applies a severe “zero tolerance” policy towards the new coronavirus, is going through a wave of outbreaks attributed to the omicron variant that is causing record numbers of infections not seen since the start of the pandemic in the first half of 2020.

The National Health Commission also detailed that, until last local midnight (4:00 p.m. GMT on Monday), 1,179 patients were discharged after successfully overcoming covid.

The total number of active infections in mainland China amounts to 27,859, 59 of whom are serious.

According to the institution’s accounts, since the start of the pandemic, 145,808 people have been infected in the country, among whom 113,311 have managed to heal and 4,638 have died.

To date, medical follow-up has been carried out on more than 2.2 million close contacts with those infected, of which 370,261 are still under observation.
