The United States will allow transgender people to mark their gender with an “X” in their passports

As of April 11, anyone who applies for a passport in United States You will be able to check the “X” box, and no longer just choose between “male” and “female” gender, the State Department announced Thursday on the occasion of the international day of transgender visibility.

By delivering on this promise, made in the fall, the State Department becomes, according to a press release, the “first federal agency” of United States to offer this option on an official identity document.

The White House announced a series of initiatives to facilitate administrative procedures for transgender people.

These include an update of body scanners used in airports to take into account non-binary and intersex people, the simplification of administrative procedures and the creation of an information website on gender transition, aimed at young people and their parents. .

“Transgender people are among the bravest in our country. But no one should be brave just to be themselves,” the White House said in a statement.

While the federal government defines actions in favor of the transgender population, conservative states adopt restrictive regulations on the care of transgender minors or the practice of sports and the use of bathrooms by members of that community.

In Texas, investigations have been opened against parents under a controversial directive from the governor, which equates certain procedures of “gender reassignment” of minors to criminally punishable “abuse”.

“The (federal) administration once again condemns the proliferation of dangerous legislative attacks against transgender people in several states,” says the statement from the White House on Thursday.

“It is proven that these types of laws stigmatize and endanger the well-being of transgender children” and “they run the risk of creating discrimination and harassment” against their families, says the US Executive.
