China registers 2,129 new cases of coronavirus, 2,086 due to local transmission

The National Health Commission of China announced today the detection of 2,129 new infections of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus this Friday, 2,086 of them by local transmission and the rest, imported.

The regions with the highest number of community transmission cases continued to be Jilin (northeast, 1,730) and Shanghai (east, 260).

China, which applies a severe policy of “zero tolerance” towards the new coronavirus, is going through a wave of outbreaks attributed to the omicron variant that is causing infection figures not seen for two years.

Health authorities also reported today the detection of 7,869 asymptomatic cases, 7,789 of them local, although the authorities do not count them as confirmed cases unless they show symptoms.

Shanghai was, by far, the area where the most of these infections were detected, with 6,051.

The National Health Commission also detailed that, until last local midnight (4:00 p.m. GMT on Friday), 4,307 patients were discharged after successfully overcoming covid.

The total number of active infected in the China continental amounts to 27,128, 58 of them in serious condition.

According to the institution’s accounts, since the start of the pandemic, 153,232 people have been infected in the country and 4,638 have died, two of them last week, the first deaths recorded in more than a year.

To date, medical follow-up has been carried out on more than 2.3 million close contacts with those infected, of which some 369,000 are still under observation.
