President of the European Commission will go to kyiv on Friday in “support” for Ukraine

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced this Thursday that she will travel to kyiv to express her “unfailing support” for Ukraine in their fight against the Russian invasion.

“The Ukrainian people deserve our solidarity. It is for this reason that I will travel to kyiv tomorrow (Friday)”, declared the European leader during a press conference on Thursday in Stockholm. “I want to send a message of unfailing support to the Ukrainian people and their courageous fight for our common values,” she said.

The Commission had announced its visit to the Ukrainian capital for “this week”, accompanied by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

The two are expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of Saturday’s “Stand Up for Ukraine” event in Warsaw, Poland, to raise funds for refugees.

von der Leyen’s trip follows that of the president of the European Parliament, Roberto Metsola, a few days ago.

On March 15, the prime ministers of Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic were the first European leaders to travel to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Since then, the Russian troops are reorganizing their troops to concentrate their efforts in the east of the country.
