Venezuela rejects decision to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council

The government of Venezuela rejected this Thursday the decision taken by the UN countries to suspend Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council due to the abuses committed during its invasion of Ukraine, reported the Foreign Minister of the Caribbean country, Félix Plasencia.

“As a founding member of the United Nations Organization, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its commitment to the principles and mandate of its Founding Charter, and rejects the decision to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council”, the foreign minister wrote on his Twitter account.

The decision of the UN members, taken this Thursday morning, is based on alleged “serious and systematic violations of human rights” committed by Russian troops in the neighboring country.

The General Assembly of the instance approved the initiative promoted by the United States with 93 votes in favor, 24 against and 58 abstentions, easily exceeding the necessary two-thirds majority, given that only the “if it is” and the “It is not”.

Russia it is the second country suspended from the Human Rights Council since it was created in 2006. Until now, the only precedent was the exclusion of Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya in response to the repression of the 2011 protests.

In this regard, the Venezuelan official assured that this resolution affects multilateralism and contravenes the dialogue options that the Government of Venezuela supports.

“We condemn the application of this resolution that affects multilateralism, as well as the prospects for dialogue that our country actively promotes. This decision breaks down bridges necessary for understanding and seriously threatens security, order and global peace,” said Plasencia.

In addition, the Venezuelan foreign minister insisted that the “illegal imposition of unilateral coercive measures” against the Caribbean country affects the “active contribution to peacekeeping”.

“Today we denounce the deepening of the attacks against multilateralism, which restrict our exercise of the inalienable right to vote in the UN, through the illegal imposition of unilateral coercive measures, and affects our active contribution to peacekeeping”pointed out the Venezuelan official.

Since he began his invasion of Ukrainelast February 24, Russia it has been very isolated and on the eve of today’s vote it had put pressure on numerous countries with a letter warning them that voting in favor or even abstaining would be seen as a hostile gesture and with consequences.
