Zelensky proposes to Russia to exchange detained politician for captive children

the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyproposed this Tuesday to exchange pro-Russian political detainee Victor Medvedchuk, a friend of the Kremlin chief, Vladimir Putinfor the captive children of the Russian army.

“I propose to the Russian Federation to exchange this guy of yours for our boys and girls who are now in Russian captivity. Therefore, it is important that our law enforcement and military forces also consider this possibility,” Zelensky said in his usual late-night address released by the presidential website.

Zelensky announced Medvedchuk’s detention on his Telegram channel on Tuesday.

“A special operation has been carried out thanks to the Ukrainian Security Service. Bravo!” Zelensky wrote on that social network.

Zelensky’s message was accompanied by a photo of Medvedchuk, seated, handcuffed and dressed in military clothing with a Ukrainian flag badge.

Medvedchuk was under house arrest by order of the judge, but he fled on February 24, just as Russia began its so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The 67-year-old politician and businessman was accused of high treason for revealing state secrets, having business in the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, working for Russia and having “solid ties” with Putin.

“I think it’s especially cynical of him to wear military camouflage. I tried to dress up like this. Here is a “soldier”. Here is a “patriot”, the Ukrainian president said tonight about the pro-Russian political detainee.

“Well, if Medvedchuk chooses a military uniform for himself, he falls under the rules of war,” he added.

Zelensky proposed the exchange by denouncing that “there are more and more testimonies and other official data from the investigation about the horrible crimes of the occupiers in the areas where, unfortunately, they were able to reach. About the inhuman cruelty of the Russian army towards women and children. About numerous violations.”
