Three Covid-19 patients, treated in intensive care in a hospital in Bucharest (Romania), died on Monday evening. It was a failure of the oxygen supply system that caused the tragedy, according to the authorities.

“The ventilators have stopped working due to an increase in the oxygen pressure beyond the allowable limit,” said the Romanian Department of Emergency Situations (DSU) in a statement. An investigation has been opened, the document said.

“We cannot guarantee that such incidents will not be repeated”

The three victims, three women over 60 with a serious medical history, died of cardiac arrest. They were in a vehicle transformed into an intensive care unit and parked in front of the hospital. Five other patients were transferred urgently to other establishments in the capital, according to the DSU.

“For more than a year, we have been at war against the coronavirus pandemic, the pressure on hospitals is very great”, reacted Prime Minister Florin Citu during an emergency press conference. “We cannot guarantee that such incidents will not be repeated. “

Romania passed the milestone of one million Covid-19 cases this weekend. This Sunday, 1,531 patients were in intensive care, a record since the start of the pandemic. So far, more than 2.3 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
