“We believe that it is time to help Venezuela, through dialogue, to fully recover its normal functioning as a country and as a society. We are not going to achieve it if we leave it alone, without ambassadors and without our attention, ”said the Argentine president at a press conference, where he was accompanied by the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso.

The Argentine president considered that “as a first step”, Argentina “wants to regain its full diplomatic ties with Venezuela.”

“It is a step that we are taking and I call on all Latin American countries to review it, because Venezuela has had a difficult time,” he added.

In this sense, Fernández stressed that many of Venezuela’s problems “have been dissipating over time,” thanks, in part, to the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and to the agreements reached. within the framework of the International Contact Group on Venezuela.

Diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela became tense during the mandate of the liberal Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), who recognized the leader of the Venezuelan Parliament, Juan Gaidó, as the legitimate president of his country.

THE POSITION OF ECUADOR

Regarding the full recovery of diplomatic ties with Venezuela, the Ecuadorian president said, for his part, that his Executive will “consider” and “analyze” it.

“We are not ready to make a decision yet, but we welcome President Fernández’s call,” Lasso said, adding that Ecuador views the diplomatic rapprochement between the United States and Venezuela with “respect.”

“These are sovereign actions that from our side we view with respect. We will always favor dialogue in a relationship and that dialogue can overcome conflicts of the past, better still, still”, indicated, in this regard, the Ecuadorian president.
