“Within deep respect for the Constitution and the law, as president of all Colombians, I will not expropriate the wealth and assets of their owners. I will NOT expropriate. I am not going to expropriate anything or anyone, ”reads the affidavit that she signed today, along with her formula for the vice presidency, the lawyer Francia Márquez.

Petro, former mayor of Bogotá and who is the favorite in voting intentions in the latest polls, assured that he was “forced to make this commitment to the whole of Colombian society” due to the “campaign of fear” that exists in against him and to which he blames his defeat against the current president, Iván Duque, in the last elections.

“There are those who constantly try to sow doubts about my proposals and my intentions towards the Colombian people and invent the shadow of a supposed expropriation to scare the unwary. Nothing could be further from reality,” said Petro, who invited the rest of the candidates to follow in his footsteps so that they “say clearly that they will not allow the Colombian peasantry to be expropriated.”

According to his statement, “the Colombian State has been allowing landowners and nouveau riche to keep expropriated land from peasants and farm laborers for many years, through the expansion of paramilitarism supported by the institutions and political forces represented in Congress.”

Petro has repeatedly denounced being the victim of a smear campaign and lies against him, including accusations of expropriation and turning Colombia into Venezuela.
