The death of a swimmer that shocked all of Australia

The meeting of the Australian family with the animal occurred shortly after news that shocked the world: on February 21, a swimmer died in Sydney after being mutilated by a great white shark between four and five meters long. The terrible situation was recounted by witnesses who recalled hearing the man’s deafening screams.

The terrifying footage shows local fishermen helplessly watching as the victim was attacked by the animal on Little Bay Beach. A witness described seeing the shark “swallow parts of his body” after splitting him in two and then seeing him come out of the water. While fatal attacks of this kind are recorded in Australia every year, this was the first to happen in Sydney since 1963.

After the alarm sounded, rescue helicopters and lifeguards on jet skis were dispatched in search of the swimmer. Also dozens of bathers were ordered to immediately get out of the water.

The remains of the attacked man were found in the sea a short time later, as confirmed by the New South Wales State Police. Parts of a wetsuit were also recovered. “The images clearly show half a body being taken by a shark,” an official said.

The incident occurred in front of dozens of fishermen and bathers, who heard the screams of the swimmers before the attack took place, causing panic on the coast.

The New South Wales state government has spent millions of dollars on technology in a bid to reduce shark attacks amid public concern: They deployed networks and drones on 51 beaches, as well as listening stations that can track them by satellite and send an alert when they are caught.
