Red Cross calls for a humanitarian corridor in Mariupol and the Azovstal steel company to evacuate thousands of civilians

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today called for the creation of a humanitarian corridor in Mariupol and the Azovstal steel company to evacuate the thousands of civilians and hundreds of wounded who remain in the besieged Ukrainian port city.

“The ICRC is deeply concerned about the situation in Mariupol, where the population urgently needs help. For the safe and voluntary departure of thousands of civilians and hundreds of wounded from the city, including the Azovstalit is necessary to provide immediate humanitarian access without obstacles, ”says the statement, quoted by the Unian agency.

He adds that since the end of February, the ICRC has been working tirelessly to help civilians in Mariupol and other cities from which they cannot escape.

The organization says it has repeatedly called for civilians to be allowed to be safely removed from the combat zone, as well as for the possibility of delivering humanitarian aid.

“As a neutral and impartial mediator, the ICRC stands ready to help the parties to the conflict reach practical and workable agreements to ensure the voluntary evacuation of those in need”adds the statement.

Teams of workers have been deployed on the ground to facilitate a safe exit as soon as said agreement is reached and security guarantees are provided, it indicates.
