“We can count on France for 5 more years”: European leaders welcome Macron’s re-election with relief

The main leaders of the European Union congratulated this Sunday the liberal Emmanuel Macron for her victory in the French presidential elections against the far-right Marine Le Pen and positively valued her victory for the EU “in these difficult times”.

“I am pleased that we can continue our excellent cooperation. Together we will make France and Europe move forward”, the president of the European Council wrote on Twitter, Charles Michael.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyenpointed out that, “in this stormy period”, it is necessary “a solid Europe and a France totally committed to a more sovereign and more strategic EU”.

“We can count on France for another five years”he added.

Also joining in the congratulations were the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, mario draghiwhich called Macron’s victory “excellent news for all of Europe.”

The President of the European Parliament, Roberto Metsolacongratulated the Frenchman on his “great re-election” at a time when the EU needs a “strong” France.

Macron’s rival in this second round, the far-right Marine LePenhad promised in the event of victory to subtract power from the institutions of the European Union and return part of its powers to the Member States.
