The UN calls for an “immediate” truce in Mariupol to evacuate civilians

The UN called for a truce this Sunday.immediate” in the besieged city ukrainian from Mariupolin the southeast of the country, in order to evacuate civilians trapped in the town.

“We need a pause in the fighting to save lives. The longer we wait, the more lives will be at risk. They must be allowed to be safely evacuated now, today. Tomorrow might be too late.”said in a statement the United Nations coordinator for the crisis in UkraineAmin Awad

The UN warned of the rapid deterioration in Mariupolwhere according to the mayor some 100,000 civilians are waiting to be evacuated and some 20,000 have died since the start of the war.

“The lives of tens of thousands, including women, children and the elderly, are at stake in Mariupol”, Awad insisted.

The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterreshad previously called for a humanitarian truce throughout Ukraine during the Orthodox Easter, but received no response from Russia.
