29 convicted of “terrorism” pardoned on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr

In Morocco, 29 convicted in cases related to “terrorism” but repented were pardoned by the king, on the occasion of the religious holiday of Eid el-Fitr, announced this Sunday evening the Ministry of Justice.

They “officially expressed their attachment to the constants and the sacredness of the Nation and to national institutions, revised their ideological orientations and rejected extremism and terrorism”, indicated the authority in a press release. Thus, 23 pardoned will be released, while the remaining six will see their sentences reduced.

958 convicts pardoned for Eid al-Fitr

In 2017, the country launched a reintegration program called “Reconciliation” (Moussalaha) in its prisons, targeting prisoners convicted of “terrorism” who wish to repent.

Since 2002, Morocco has dismantled more than 2,000 jihadist cells and arrested more than 3,500 people accused of links with radical Islamist groups. In total, Mohammed VI pardoned 958 people sentenced by the various courts of the country on the occasion of the Eid el-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims.
