The 400 Mawozo gang made global news in October with the kidnapping of 17 missionaries from the United States and Canada who were held for two months, and in recent weeks has clashed with a rival gang in shootouts that have forced thousands to leave their homes.
“Germine Joly alias ‘Yonyon’ was extradited to the United States on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, aboard a special (FBI) plane following a request issued by the US judicial authorities,” the Haitian National Police said in a statement. .

Joly, who had already been in jail in Haiti before the missionaries’ kidnapping, faces charges in the United States related to arms smuggling and “kidnapping US citizens,” according to the statement.
Haiti’s gangs have grown in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July, and large areas of the capital and countryside are no longer controlled by government authorities.
